History
Mulakuzha is a village panchayat included in Chengannur block in Chengannur taluk of Alappuzha district. The area of the panchayat is 22.67 square kilometers. Mulakuzha village panchayat is located at the southeastern edge of Alappuzha district, sharing a border with Pathanamthitta district. Unlike other areas of Alappuzha, this area is full of hills and small streams. Located about 50 kilometers from Alappuzha, the village panchayat is bounded on the north by Chengannur Municipality and Aarannmull panchayat, on the south by Kulnad and Vennmani panchayats, on the west by Ala panchayat, and on the east by Mezhuveli and Aarannmull panchayats. In earlier times, Mulakuzha village was in Thiruvalla taluk of Kollam district in Travancore. The Anjumalanada of Areekkara, where an extremely rare form of Kaurava worship continues, is in this panchayat. Although there are many hills and mountains, the southern and northeastern borders of the panchayat are covered with low-lying areas of paddy fields and canals. Previously, there were acres of forest here. When these forests were cleared for habitation, only the bamboo groves, which were relatively difficult to cut and destroy, remained. The area filled with bamboo groves is believed to have later transformed from 'Mulanguzhi' to 'Mulakuzhi'. The Karakkad Dharma Shastha Temple is evidence of the influence Buddhism once had here.
